Single-segment speed run of Resident Evil: Code Veronica X [eu] for GameCube completed in 2:18:20 on August 18, 2006. Was rejected for posting on Speed Demos Archive.
Author's comments:
I can't say I'm done with the game. I played back the tape and thought alot about whether to send this in or not because I got really lucky with monster routes, but then had a shitload of badluck elsewhere to even out what would've been a really good run. This is a normal thing with the game, but it's something I really wanted to beat anyway. My hands were already shaking 20 minutes within the run. That's how lucky you have to be.
You see, most of the monster routes are simply running the fastest route while you're expecting them to cooperate, making the run a real luck fest. If they don't cooperate, then you either forget about it and move on, or start again and put a hole in the wall. Check out the first time I'm grabbed. The zombie picked up the pace and while I was being grabbed his friend also sped up and went into forced-bite mode... I didn't see the first grab coming because I've never gotten grabbed there before, and there was nothing I could do about the second zombie. When you're force-bitten (you can't shake off the zombie until after you're bitten), you take two bites, not one. Serious punishment for Claire, and you can only stretch her health so far. When I was grabbed for the last time on disc 1, my frustration surfaced pretty quickly and that was only made worse with all the bad luck in Chris's game. All the hardest parts of the game are on Rock Forte Island, and from there it can quickly go down hill.
This is more than enough to turn you off the game when you're speedrunning it, and when you're comparing your run to Zeno's 3 year old, near-perfect, 2 segment run you can see how frustrating the game is. You can compare our disc 1 runs, but not disc 2 obviously.
When my luck started to turn I was deciding whether or not to go ahead with plan B, which was to create space to carry both First Aid Sprays. After the Tyrant fights, I thought I made the wrong decision, but it turns out I didn't when Claire was limping in 'danger' at the very end of her game. I thought about it so much, in fact, that I lost focus and ran in the wrong direction 4-5 times. I was also deciding wether or not to get an extra grenade pack in case the grenades scatter too much, but I decided not to because I wanted to hand Tyrant his ass on a silver platter.
I must've changed strategies four times as Claire, and two of them were necessary (plan B, and Dr. Zombie).
Because this is the PAL version not only is the gameplay slowed down, but also the way you use items (I haven't seen this in any other PAL versions of a game). The game doesn't respond to rapid tapping in the inventory screen, so you have to time your presses when you're using an item. Rapid taps will only slow you down by roughly 0.2 seconds. When it looks like I hesitate to use an item, then I was pressing A too fast. I'm not sure if the computer screens are also slowed down, but I can't enter the codes as fast as Zeno does.
Of all the things I didn't want to encounter was in Antartica; picking up the Butler file. I can usually pick it up while walking (you can't while running) but this time I had to stop moving. It happened again when I went to rescue Claire. These are the only two spots that this can happen. Also, it's weird that the game forces you to be closer to the computer/juke box when you use the paper weight/music disc. You're close enough to examine them, but not close enough to use an item...
Check out the amazing start I have with Chris: the Giant Worm surfaces alot later than usual and he dies in front of me... On top of that, the trick I used at the panel was useless. Some of the Hunter strategies didn't work and the Adult Albinoid was aggressive, catching me in a pickup loop. I ended up picking up 3 more green herbs than optimal. What happened at the air port bridge had me thinking about resetting and it was enough to put me off my game (I did some stupid things in my frustration. Even I was asking myself outloud why I did them). I was shaking my head and rolling my eyes alot during Chris's game (especially with what happens at Alexia 2). However, there were some jaw-dropping moments: the graveyard, the conference room (Claire, disc 1), the first Hunter encounter, when I had to avoid two Poison Hunters without using explosive arrows, and I made it through the hardest zombie route all 3 times in a row (you first see it when I go get the steering wheel)!
I wanted a proper SS run, but it didn't happen. I retried the first time on purpose because I couldn't kill Nosferatu that time. The second retry was my fault again because I missed the first shot. I ended up with a slower fight because I wanted to end it, even though I accidently hit his heart the third time.
I hope I didn't turn you off the run :) It's not everyday I got as lucky as I did here and I thought 2:18 would be too hard to achieve, but now I think 2:15 is possible with better luck alone. Chances are I won't have as good a start as I did in this run when I eventually get it.
Huge thanks to Jake and 19Duke84, who helped me learn some of the tricks and for coming up with the best Tyrant strategy (it was one of the main reasons why I stuck with the run) and a faster blue plate route. Thanks to nate for capturing the run, Radix for hosting it, LonelyBob for advertising the run and to everyone who posted in the topic.
Hope you enjoy the run.
